Offices and shop in the Masséna District (Paris, 13th Arrondissement) by ecdm

Paris-based ecdm (Emmanuel Combarel and Dominique Marrec Architects) was awarded the first place finish for their proposals for the construction of a sustained mixed-use building located in the ZAC Masséna (Paris, 13th arrondissement). This program consists of a mix of offices and a shop.

The building assumes a strong urban character and identity.  It is characterised by a narrow façade which faces the boulevard du Général Jean Simon (Masséna-Paris, 13th arrondissement). This results in a long, narrow and extruded volume. The building is delimited by two inclined plans which form a green roof.

This monolith will be made of blue granite as a reference to the stone found in Hénault department. Based on the High Environmental Quality (HQE in French for Haute Qualité Environnementale), the use of large openings will allow maximum levels of natural light to the spaces. Not only will the building bring out the building, but also it can serve for many purposes such as providing insulation, and helping to lower urban air temperatures.

The geometry of this volume forms a unity from the whole components of the building, the roof included aiming to bring out the inclined plans of the roof.

The axonometric plan below shows that the articulation of the building. Interiors are structured by open and vertical circulation. Panoramic elevators, enclosed and non-enclosed staircases organize the vertical circulation providing a flexible and open connection between the levels. Spaces facing the street are less formal will be composed of the large non-enclosed stairways. Large openings will illuminate the rooms.

Who are they?
Founded in 1993, Emmanuel Combarel and Dominique Marrec Architects (ecdm) is an architecture office based in Paris. ecdm's work focuses on transformational and flexible concepts as well as on issues of sustainable development. Open programming provides an overall conceptual platform to define specific scenarios for specific projects. In close collaboration with clients, associate engineers, consultants and future occupants, the firm works to develop fundamental concepts that guide a design response, appropriate to a specific time, place and program. The search for quality in design and construction is at the centre of the firm's organization and its ongoing collaboration with professionals from all disciplines. ecdm has been continually working on defining a living environment through an architectural project. The dynamics of the project emerges from a confrontation with the context, and a hierarchization of the problematic induced by the program and the site. The architecture that materialized the firms's approach is underpinned by the evolutions and mutations of our society. Its tends to be a simple, sober architecture following a rigorous logic, with no preconceptions, nostalgia or stylistic preoccupation. Environmental quality, landscape, uses, ways of life, and technical choices are all structuring elements of the office's projects. The team's philosophy is built on principles acquired progressively from 12 years of experience in developing specific projects in all sectors of architectural practice including new construction, renovation, urbanism and design.
